Old Lost and Found

BulletJoyce Morriss (29 May 1997)
I found the following information at the Scottsboro Alabama Library, published in "A Maples Leaf" genealogy magazine, Rev #1, pg 447: William McCampbell Maples, b 9 May 1832 d 19 Apr, 1899, married MARY JANE TONEY, b 3 May 1845 in Hollytree, Jackson Co AL, daughter of Elijah and Sarah Toney. Sarah Toney is living with her daughter's family in the 1870 census. This record gives Sarah's age as 65 born in GA. I received a letter from a "cousin" saying the Toneys were from Pennsylvania and that "Uncle 'Lija" went back to Philadelphia once a year up until the Civil War. Another source leads me to believe that "Lija" may have a NC connection. Also, "Lija" may have had a sister born in 1810 in KY named Jane (yr and state from 1850 Jackson Co AL census) who married James M Campbell. I would very much like to hear from anyone who may offer leads of these folks. Joyce

Also there are quite a few of us in NC. Mostly in western NC. It will be interesting to see if you have any listings from nc.. talk to ya later, Dale Toney (dale@blueridge.net)

I found this site on the internet and I was so excited. I am a decendent of the Toney Family. We have a family tree going back to Poindexter Toney 1763 that was compiled by one of my cousins. Don't think all of the info. has been proven. Has your research included this Poindexter Toney? Priscilla Mitchem E-mail address emitchem@CWV.net

BulletThelma Johnson (7 Apr 1997)
I wonder if you are familiar with Toney River in Pictou County? The story is that a French captain named Toney sailed frequently to this area to gather timber for ship's masts to be sent back to France. This would probably be late 1700's or early 1800's. He married a native lady (MicMac) and they had family. One of the sons was drowned in the local river and it was then given the name of Toney River. There are still a number of MicMac families at the Pictou Landing reservation with the surname of Toney. Thelma Johnson R R #2 Scotsburn (Toney River) Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada B0K 1RO

BulletErin Toney (13 Mar 1997)
I'm a California Toney, descended from I believe John Toney who was George washington's body guard. Hence my line of Toney's has many George Washington Toney's in it. I have traced my line back to Mason County Ill. Before that they were in Mo. and before that I thnk OH. The gap comes in for me between John Toney and Elias Toney. Do you no any info or resources that could put in the pieces? Thank you, Erin Toney

BulletRaquel Toney (11 Dec 1996)
I can't remember our E-mail address. Sorry! It is Compuserve and lots of numbers! Anyway, this is great. My dad has been researching the Toney family for about 35 years and has written several books. He is Benejemin Claude Toney in Texas. I have just downloaded a data file and found my name on it! That was great. But I have a daughter who had not been added. She is Maya Toney( just to confuse all of you she has kept my name. She was born 30/12/94 in London England at the Whittington Hospital. Hope that helps! I wish I could remember my E-mail address. But will write back soon and tell you.
Raquel Toney London, England - Wednesday, December 11, 1996 at 13:44:14 (EST)

Dear Brian, My dad is Benjamin Claud Toney and lives in Springtown texas. Like I said before he has been researching the toney family for about 30 odd years and has written a book called "Toney- The First Millenium" going back to Malahulcius in 860ad. My dad does not have any idea about the internet and i haven't yet been able to tell him about this page. He will be thrilled. Hopefully I will be able to update information for him. My knowledge of the family is limited. I must admit I have never taken much interest. But now i have my daughter it has appealed to me more. Anyway pleased to meet you. My dad may be contacted at the following address.I'm sure he would love to share information. But i would rather not give it out publicly until I have asked him. It is Ben Toney, PO Box 449, Springtown, texas,76082. Bye for now. Raquel Toney London, England - Friday, December 13, 1996 at 4:23 AM (EST)

Dear Brian, I spoke to my dad today and he said it was fine to give out his address. He says he sells the book for $36 (which includes P+P) so as the homepage is non-commercial I don't know if it is ok for you to advertise this. I told him I had spoken to you and he says he would be interested to hear about your research. I was looking through Barbara's data base and found all my family on there, including myself! I found some discrepancies between her info and my dads and asked him about this. He said that her info seems to have come from another woman's book which is based on info from another woman in california(I don't know thier names) and unfortunately no one has been able to find this woman in California to confirm the info so my dad has been careful not to include it in his book. He also told me that the Toney's "owned " Walthamstow, London once and apparently the library there has some sort of tapestry dedicated to the Toney family. It is a few miles away from me so i think I will go and have a look. Owning walthamstow these days is not a great accolade though. Quite honestly it is a dump, but I will imagine more prosperous times on my visit!! Anyway my dad seems to have alot of info and could probably help alot of people asking for help. Unfortunately he hasn't stepped into the realms of cyberspace so anyone wishing to ask him will have to write in the old fashioned way!! Talk to you soon Raquel London, England - Monday, December 16, 1996 at 4:03 PM (EST)
